I was calling the IRS number (855-973-0715) to see why it was taking so long for me to get my EIN for my writing business. I just finished a book and wanted the royalties to be put in a business account. I faxed the form to 855-641-6935 on Dec. 3. The person told me to call the above number because they were a third party and you had to pay for the EIN.

If at all possible, do not pick up these calls. Block the number. The callers are looking to validate that there is a live caller picking up the call and will use your information to sell to other telemarketers and scammers. Thinking that you'll give them a piece of your mind is exactly what they are looking for, as they've just validated that you have a live number.

I own my own business so I called the IRS directly. The number they list will bring you to a false IRS page. They are fully aware of the scam. There is another number: 516-231-1686. The person said he was an officer for the IRS. I explained that the IRS does NOT have "officers" that make outreach calls, that they will contact you only through certified mail. Needless to say, our conversation became very interesting after that. I left him on the phone and went back to my doing whatever it was I was doing. He rambled on for 10 more minutes. Save yourselves the hassle and block the 800-829-4933 number and the 516-231-1686. It's all a fraud.

Same as the others. Calls from the 646 area about a lawsuit and 800 IRS number. Repeated calls. Caller ID number is a legitimate IRS number but the caller is a scammer. Sounds like he's from Nigeria. This is frightening. It is a bonafide IRS number, but the caller is clearly calling from a call center in India. As soon as he said he was the IRS, I told him to mail me whatever it was he was going to tell me about and that we have nothing further to discuss and hung up. How can this be legal?
