Iets meer dan een jaar geleden begon ik te experimenteren met manieren om mijn Dolby Atmos surround sound-systeem uit te breiden tot voorbij de 7.1.4-beperking van de huidige consumentenhardware. Mijn voortdurende zoektocht om de beste Atmos-ervaring thuis te bereiken, heeft me onlangs ertoe aangezet om extra upgrades uit te voeren. Tegenwoordig is mijn thuisbioscoop zo waanzinnig ingewikkeld dat ik eigenlijk drie A/V-receivers tegelijk moet gebruiken om al mijn luidsprekers te beheren.
In de meeste thuisbioscopen zou 7.1.4 geluidskanalen voldoende moeten zijn. Hoewel het Atmos-formaat (evenals zijn concurrent, DTS:X) extra luidsprekers kan ondersteunen, is daar niet veel vraag naar van consumenten of veel druk van fabrikanten om het te doen. Momenteel zijn alleen high-end boetiekproducten zoals de $ 37.000Trinnov Hoogte 32zal meer dan 11 kanalen tegelijk decoderen.
Desalniettemin is voor sommigen van ons een limiet van vier hoogtekanalen niet voldoende om de bovenkant van de kamer met geluid te vullen. Mijn eigen thuisbioscoop is een lange kamer met veel ruimte achter mijn stoelen. Dat, in combinatie met een laag plafond, maakt het voor slechts vier speakers (twee voorin de kamer en twee achterin) moeilijk om een geluid boven mijn hoofd overtuigend weer te geven. Dit probleem wordt nog verergerd door het feit dat de locaties waar ik luidsprekers had geïnstalleerd toen ik de thuisbioscoop bouwde (voordat meeslepende audio een zorg was waar ik aan dacht) niet ideaal waren voor Atmos. Die luidsprekers zitten nu vast met bedrading door de muren en het plafond, en ik kan ze niet verplaatsen zonder de kamer opnieuw in te richten. Dat is gewoon geen optie.
De betere oplossing is om extra luidsprekers in het midden tussen de andere hoogtekanalen te plaatsen (Top Middle positie). Helaas ligt de vraagprijs voor die Trinnov-processor absurd boven mijn budget. Ik moest een manier vinden om een vergelijkbaar effect te jury-riggen voor een fractie van de kosten.

De eerste poging

Ik raad aan om dat stuk te lezen om het basisconcept te begrijpen van hoe zoiets mogelijk is.

Zelfs toentertijd was ik niet de enige die hiermee experimenteerde, en ik wist dat mijn Zatmos-systeem niet zo ideaal was als ik had gewild.Bij AVSForum, was een lid genaamd Scott Simonian zelfs nog verder gegaan om in totaal te gebruikendrie A/V-receiversin koor om een 7.1.6-configuratie (liefkozend bekend als "Scatmos") te creëren die nauwkeuriger is voor de bedoelingen van de originele Dolby Atmos-geluidsmixers.
Een tijdje heb ik besloten om niet zo ver te gaan. De complexiteit van het installeren, aansluiten en configureren van drie A/V-receivers leek me overdreven. Ik had het gevoel dat de resultaten die ik had met Zatmos goed genoeg waren om me daar grotendeels te krijgen, en ik had een zekere mate van egoïstische trots dat ik een manier had bedacht om het te doen met slechts één extra ontvanger in plaats van twee.
De afgelopen maanden veranderde mijn houding echter en werd ik minder tevreden met de Zatmos-configuratie. Uiteindelijk wist ik dat als ik dit ging doen, ik het goed moest doen.

Volledige Scatmos gaan
De dwaze bijnamen Zatmos en Scatmos kunnen formeler worden gegroepeerd onder de noemer 'Dolby Atmos Extended'. Ik wil hier duidelijk zijn dat ik het Scatmos-proces niet heb ontwikkeld. De eer daarvoor gaat naar Scott Simonian en anderen bij AVSForum die hem hielpen het uit te werken. Met zijn toestemming probeer ik het hier alleen uit te leggen.
Want hoe belachelijk ingewikkeld ze misschien ook zijn om te installeren, een van de goedmakertjes van deze experimenten is dat ze relatief goedkoop in elkaar gezet kunnen worden. Hoewel uw primaire A/V-ontvanger een Dolby Atmos (of DTS:X)-model moet zijn dat in staat is om 7.1.4-kanaals geluid te decoderen van een meeslepende Blu-ray- of UHD-soundtrack, hoeven de secundaire ontvangers lang niet zo modieus. Elke ontvanger die minimaal Dolby ProLogic II-verwerking heeft, is voldoende. (Als u meerdere secundaire ontvangers gebruikt, raad ik aan dat ze identiek aan elkaar zijn.)
Met een beetje geduld tijdens het volgen van Te Koop-advertenties op mijn lokale Craigslist, slaagde ik erin een paar gebruikte Marantz SR4400's op te halen voor ruim onder de $ 100 per stuk. Dit is een no-nonsense instapmodel (of bijna) Dolby Digital/DTS-model uit 2003. Het is zo eenvoudig dat het niet eens een menusysteem op het scherm heeft. Ik moet het instellen met alleen het display op het voorpaneel. De receiver heeft geen HDMI en kan geen lossless Dolby TrueHD of DTS-HD Master Audio signalen verwerken, maar dat hoeft ook niet. Het enige dat nodig is, is een paar analoge stereo-ingangen (die elke ontvanger zal hebben) en ProLogic II.

De simpele handeling van het vinden van een plek om een andere A/V-receiver in mijn systeem te plaatsen, bleek veel meer een beproeving te zijn dan ik wilde. Omdat ik er niet genoeg ruimte voor had op mijn hoofdapparatuurplank, moest ik al mijn componenten verwijderen, de plank uit elkaar halen, de niveaus herschikken, de meeste apparatuur terugzetten en weer aansluiten. Toen moest ik hetzelfde doen met de tweede plank om een niveau toe te voegen. Mijn Blu-ray- en HD-dvd-spelers, die eerder op de hoofdplank stonden, zijn naar de tweede verplaatst, zodat ik alle audioapparatuur bij elkaar kon houden waar de luidsprekerkabel het zal bereiken. Dit was op zich al een enorme pijn om te doen.

Als dat klaar is, is hier het basisidee achter Scatmos: u wilt zes plafondluidsprekers monteren - in de posities Top Front, Top Middle en Top Rear. (De volgende schets geeft niet mijn persoonlijke luidsprekeropstelling weer, maar ik heb het op deze manier getekend om te laten zien hoe het moetzou moetenworden gedaan.) Uw primaire A/V-ontvanger wordt ingesteld om het maximum van 7.1.4 kanalen te decoderen, geconfigureerd als Top Front en Top Rear.
Alle vier de hoogtekanalen moeten naar de analoge pre-out-aansluitingen op de primaire AVR worden geleid. Sluit geen luidsprekerkabel aan op die kanalen op de primaire AVR. Voor alle hoogtekanalen wordt alleen luidsprekerkabel aangesloten op de secundaire AVR's.
De pre-outs voor de kanalen Top Front Left en Top Rear Left gaan naar de rechter en linker stereo-ingangen van de AVR 2.

Als dat al verwarrend klinkt, kan het echt ontmoedigend zijn om het recht te houden terwijl je de kabels en draden aansluit. Ik raad ten zeerste aan om een grafiek te tekenen die laat zien wat waar moet komen.
Als ze goed werken, zou elk van de secundaire stroomafwaartse AVR's een stereosignaal moeten ontvangen dat bestaat uit een deel voor en een deel achter, en een middenkanaal daartussen matrixen met behulp van alle mono-informatie die beide gemeen hebben (net zoals ProLogic II een middenkanaal zou extraheren voor dialoog onder normale omstandigheden voor in uw kamer tussen uw linker- en rechterluidsprekers). Auto sometimes made my music / movies sound honky, with a slight bump in the mids. Movie and Voice modes have a weird mid scoop, which makes audio sound a bit "hollow" to me. Music seemed to be the best out of the bunch — and for every type of media, too.
